FarePay goes live in Utah
On Oct. 14, 2013, the Utah Transit Authority went live with its new reloadable prepaid FarePay transit card. The UTA said the cards are available for purchase online and at UTA customer service centers. The UTA is offering fare discounts of up to 20 percent to encourage transit riders to switch to the card.
The UTA charges a one-time activation fee of $3 for FarePay cards and the cards can be loaded with amounts between $5 and $500. When riders register their cards online and create accounts, they can subsequently check balances and schedule automatic reloads online.
The FarePay card is part of UTA's open fare payment system, which allows contactless, near field communication (NFC) -enabled cards to be used to pay fares on buses and trains. Riders using FarePay cards tap the cards to readers when they embark on rides, and then tap once again before they get off.
The UTA network comprises over 600 buses and paratransit vehicles, 400 vanpools, 146 light rail vehicles, 63 commuter rail cars and 18 locomotives. In 2011, more than 41 million trips were conducted via the UTA mass transit system, the transit authority said.
