465,000 Chase prepaid card accounts hacked
On Dec. 4, 2013, JPMorgan Chase & Co. said a July 2013 data breach resulted in the compromise of the prepaid card accounts of 465,000 cardholders. Chase said the breach affected approximately 2 percent of the bank's 25 million prepaid card customers. The breach was reportedly discovered by Chase in September 2013.
The accounts under question are marketed by Chase as the UCard, which is used to facilitate payroll and for the disbursement of government benefits and tax refunds. The accounts of Chase's popular Liquid prepaid card were apparently not compromised by the intrusion.
Chase said social security numbers and email addresses were not compromised in the attack. The U.S. Secret Service and the FBI have reportedly launched investigations into the breach, but Chase does not know who hacked into its network.
