CNP digital series explores 'new normal'
CNP Summit organizers launched the CNP Virtual Summit on April 8, 2020, a digital conference series, designed to provide solution providers with education and actionable strategies. In addition to covering the latest developments in ecommerce fraud, payments and risk management, the event provides attendees with networking opportunities and live Q & A sessions, event organizers stated.
After deciding to postpone the CNP Summit, originally scheduled for May 19 to 21, 2020, at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, CNP planners reformatted the popular gathering into weekly virtual sessions. In the first session, Card Not Present editor in chief D.J. Murphy and Karisse Hendrick, founder and principal at Chargelytics Consulting, discussed "the new normal" and its impact on digital commerce payments and fraud.
"We want to provide the education we have always delivered but couched in the context of the current environment, where so many individuals and businesses are fighting for survival," Murphy said. "The first session was so well received, with such a high level of engagement, that we pushed out some content to the second week."
Diversified agenda
Post-event rebroadcasts are available online to payments industry professionals who missed live sessions, Murphy noted. Events include merchant-only meet-ups, educational sessions and a virtual solutions hall. He summarized educational sessions and rebroadcast links as follows:

Evolving payments landscape
As he reflected on COVID-19's overall impact on the payments community, Murphy pointed out that issues people are facing vary from one industry to the next. "Ecommerce is an international space," he said. "Some verticals are booming, and those types are dealing with one set of issues, such as how to scale production and mitigate new types of fraud. Then other verticals that are decimated, such as ticketing and travel, are dealing with the chargeback side of things."
Ian Gray, director of intelligence at Flashpoint, concurred, stating, "We're in an interesting and unprecedented time for not only businesses focusing on day-to-day operations, but facing new challenges from opportunistic threat actors."
Gray will offer additional insights in the CNP virtual education session on April 22, including how cybercriminals constantly evolve their tactics, techniques, and procedures to carry out fraud and account takeover schemes--not only in pandemic situations, but overall, as defenders level-up their practices for combating cybercrime, he stated.
"We will look at collections that are critical to be mindful of, like card shops and marketplaces, as well as examine trends that we are observing as digital activity increases due to stay at home orders across the globe," Gray said. "As we have previously observed, a number of large credit card breaches over the last year were from physical point-of-sale transactions. Our analysts assess that this may have an impact on either the supply or demand of stolen credit card data."
