Change is coming to digital wallet space
Mastercard debuted a new set of software tools and services intended to simplify the creation of wallet capabilities across both iOS and Android mobile devices. The introduction of Mastercard Wallet Services is intended to allow companies to quickly integrate secure, trusted contactless payments with their apps.
Mobile wallets have been mainstreamed for several years. And since the introduction of Mastercard Digital Enablement Services tokenized technology in 2014, Mastercard has partnered with industry titans like Apple, Google and Samsung to enable contactless payments globally at scale.
But while Android has long supported a range of contactless experiences, Apple has historically held tight control over third-party access to its ecosystem. That has meant that bank, fintechs and digital platforms have had to take different approaches to digital wallets for iOS and Android.
Opportunities to innovate
Apple's August 2024 decision to allow third-party developers access to its near field communication (NFC) capabilities in certain markets changed that dynamic, creating more opportunities for mobile payment choice and innovation, Mastercard's Chief Digital Officer Pablo Fourez explained in a new blog post.
"But this spark of innovation needs help to take hold. Because even as the category has matured, building a digital wallet is still incredibly technically complex," Fourez wrote. Hence the introduction of Mastercard Wallet Services.
"While consumer adoption of alternative wallets will take time, expanded platform access gives banks and fintechs new opportunities to innovate," Fourez added. "Ultimately, consumers could be the biggest winners of these changes, gaining access to a broader range of digital wallet experiences, rewards, value-added services and payment options offered through the apps they already use every day."
Banks, fintechs and other wallet providers could also benefit by building stronger connections and engagement with their user basses, Fourez noted.
A complete solution
Fourez described Mastercard Wallet Services as "a complete solution" that includes a secure element applet and software developer kits that enable contactless payments for both Android and iOS environments. "Partners can build contactless capabilities across platforms without managing separate integrations," he said.
Mastercard teams already are working with several partner banks to develop new digital wallet features using Mastercard Wallet Services, Fourez said. Expectations are that these new capabilities will start hitting the streets in select markets by year end.
