MoneyGram, Visa respond to flooding in Pakistan
To aid disaster relief efforts in Pakistan, MoneyGram International and Visa Inc. launched campaigns designed to ease the financial burdens of victims caught in floods that have claimed over 2,000 lives and destroyed over one million homes.
Through Sept. 20, money transfer specialist MoneyGram is donating to the American Red Cross the $3 send fee from every MoneyGram electronic money transfer sent to Pakistan. "The situation in Pakistan is one of the worst in recent memory and we want to do something to help people whose lives which have been devastated by the floods," said Juan Agualimpia, Chief Marketing Officer at MoneyGram.
Meanwhile, Visa partnered with United Bank Ltd. Pakistan and local Pakistani agencies to distribute relief funds to 2 million flood-affected families via the Watan Visa prepaid debit. The equivalent of $230 is loaded on the cards, Visa said. The monsoon floods, which began in July, have affected nearly 20 million people, left 4 million people homeless and destroyed thousands of villages, the card brand added.
