ATMIA 2023 dazzles New Orleans

Weeks ahead of Mardi Gras 2023, ATMIA held its 24th annual U.S. conference, Feb. 7 to 9, at the Hilton Riverside New Orleans, attracting over 1,100 ATM executives for three days of exhibits, presentations and networking.

ATMIA CEO Lonnie Talbert told The Green Sheet the high attendance and booth traffic reflects the industry's ebullient post-Covid outlook. "The strong turnout is an indication that people want to get together and connect with colleagues and industry professionals," he said. "They want to understand the new technology that's happening all around them and get back to business."

David Tente, ATMIA's executive director, U.S.A., Canada and Americas, agreed, stating the industry survived a difficult period and has re-emerged stronger and future-focused. For many, he added, this may be the first in-person event they have attended since before the pandemic.

Deep community roots

A pre-event open house and luncheon, hosted by Triton Systems LLC, a global ATM provider, celebrated the company's 44th anniversary with tours of its Long Beach, Miss., manufacturing and repair center and samplings of local cuisine, including King Cake, a local favorite. Daryl Cornell, CEO at Triton, mentioned Triton repairs all types of equipment, including other ATM brands.

"We're proud to offer an alternative to today's disposable culture," he said, adding that supporting old and new equipment is helpful to the environment and industry stakeholders.

Heather LaVergne, Triton's director of engineering, agreed, stating the company's multigenerational culture extends beyond its machines. "My daughter is a repair technician and my 12-year-old son asked when he can join Triton," she said, adding Triton has numerous second and third generation employees.

Local news anchor Parker Boyd covered the event for WYOU, a CBS and ABC affiliate, which included interviews with James Philips, executive vice president, sales and marketing at Triton, and Gavin Reubenson, an ATM sales executive from South Africa and 23-year Triton customer. "Triton builds its ATMs from the ground up in order to give the best deal to its customers," Boyd wrote in a Feb. 6, 2023 post titled, "Long Beach ATM manufacturer Triton Systems reflects on 44 years in business." He also cited the company's extended line of ATMs and Smart Safes designed to track sales and cash balances.

Human experience

Hyosung America hosted a cocktail party on Feb. 8 to celebrate its new identity as a "human experience maker." The event featured presentations by Sanghwan Kweon, Hyosung CEO, and Brad Nolan, CMO, both of whom emphasized the company's heritage of connecting the physical and virtual worlds.

"Our company has a long history of harnessing its unique combination of a manufacturer's soul with an innovator's mindset to build a platform of ATM and cash-management solutions," Kweon said. "We are opening the aperture to extend our value creation deeper into financial services and retail while we bring our platform of integrated solutions to new verticals including hospitality and travel."

Nolan agreed, stating, "It's all about improving life's day-to-day interactions for everyone." He further hinted at several game-changing products in the company's near-term product road map. He also mentioned that the company commissioned artists to create memorable graphics to highlight the company's transformational journey and its ability to create special moments in the customer experience that he referred to as "sparks."

Points of interaction

Commenting on the ATM industry's digital transformation, Don Layden, executive vice president, payments and network at NCR, stated ATMs in general are expanding footprints to convenience stores, gas stations, supermarkets and more to provide access to high-quality financial services.

"Our Allpoint Network and ATM-as-a-service offerings are creating ubiquity of access," he said. "And we're excited about the innovation we're creating in the box." He further noted that consumers who use the Allpoint Network are intentionally going to stores to access them, which has helped participating retailers increase average basket size and improve cash management.

ATMIA organizers thanked sponsors, exhibitors and attendees for participating in ATMIA 2023 and congratulated this year's ATMIA Award recipients, including lifetime award winners John C.
