Mobile payments news update

It appears 2012 is the year of mobile payments. Following are highlights from the mobile realm this week.

QuickBooks offers mobile POS

Intuit Inc.'s Intuit Payment Solutions introduced QuickBooks Point of Sale 2013. The POS product, launched June 5, 2012, integrates with Intuit's free mobile payment processing application system, GoPayment, to help small retailers accept credit cards anywhere using smart devices. The GoPayment system includes a card reading dongle that plugs into Apple Inc. iOS and Google Inc. Android smart devices.

The POS system stores all GoPayment sales and inventory data while tracking all inventory and sales. Merchants can send customers personalized emails and gift cards, access business reports, track employee hours and commissions, and manage and monitor up to 20 stores. Shop owners can also opt for accessories such as receipt printer, bar code scanner, credit card reader and cash drawer, and the data on QuickBooks Point of Sale 2013 can be synced with QuickBooks financial software to manage merchant finances.

Braintree going international

Chicago payment platform provider Braintree Payment Solutions LLC is offering its infrastructure and payment gateway to digital companies in 30 countries. Braintree said it can help companies launch, support and scale online and mobile businesses by removing barriers to e-commerce business startups. The company stated its platform provides viable options and updated technology not provided "by local processors that often use outdated legacy platforms."

Braintree noted it processes more than $4 billion in credit card transactions in more than 130 currencies yearly; nearly $1 billion of said transactions are mobile payments.

New mobile parking payment system

Passport Parking LLC, a Charlotte, N.C., provider of cloud-based parking solutions, added mobile payment to its suite of solutions. PassportParking Mobile Pay reportedly affords operators greater efficiency through real-time facility monitoring and control.

The PassportParking pay-by-phone operations management console allows parking providers to manage parking rates, contract parking, ticketing and enforcement, and real-time monitoring and reporting. Motorists can pay for parking by using a mobile app, calling into the PassportParking voice system or texting their zone and space information. Customers can also be sent text messages and voice alerts. PassportParking boasts a proprietary electronic validation system that can be used with local businesses.

PayPal mobile a serious challenger

Two research reports released the first week of June 2012 indicate PayPal Inc. is a strong contender in the mobile payments sphere.

Management and technology consulting firm Carlisle & Gallagher Consulting Group released a survey of 605 U.S. consumers' interest in mobile wallets. The study found that shoppers most interested in mobile wallets are likely to consider alternatives to traditional banking such as PayPal Inc. The consultants found that consumers would like a variety of services on their mobile wallets, for example, loyalty programs and real-time incentives. The survey discovered eight out of 10 consumers interested in mobile wallets preferred PayPal as their mobile wallet provider.

ShopVisible LLC, a Chicago software-as-a-service platform provider, said it studied 23,000 web and mobile transactions and found 67 percent of those transactions used PayPal or another form of alternative payment. Regarding web-only transactions, ShopVisible said 62 percent of the transactions were on credit cards, and just 16.8 percent used PayPal. end of article
