Account-to-account payments, also known as pay-by-bank, is set to take off in the United States, and cannabis dispensaries may be the launching pad. CanPay, a payment network designed for cannabis retailers and consumers, just announced it has received approval from the State of Utah's Division of Finance to provide payment acceptance services to pharmacies selling medical marijuana statewide.

Same-day ACH is going great guns. Nacha reported that the ACH network handled 355.2 million same-day payments in the third quarter of 2024, a whopping 67.5 percent increase over the same period in 2023. The combined value of same-day payments rose 38.8 percent over the third quarter of 2023 to total $844 billion.

Holiday spending predicted to remain brisk

The National Retail Federation is forecasting holiday spending will grow between 2.5 percent and 3.5 percent over 2023. Toast’s price hike sparks mixed reactions among restaurateurs

Restaurant POS and management system provider Toast raised its processing fees for small and midsize clients, stating it marked the first such increase in the company’s 12-year history. The adjustment, which took effect in September 2024, increased fees by between 0.05 percent and 0.23 percent for a limited number of clients, translating to less than a penny per $1 transaction.

Sen. Durbin enters the fray over Illinois interchange law

Senator Richard Durbin, D-Ill., is rejecting claims that an Illinois law exempting sales tax and gratuities from interchange assessments conflicts with the Durbin Amendment, a provision of the Dodd Frank Act that he authored back in 2010. The Durbin Amendment, among other things, empowered the Federal Reserve to cap debit card interchange assessments by the largest banks (those with $10 billion or more in assets).
