Network Merchants LLC – commonly referred to as NMI – was founded in 2001 in the Chicago suburb of Roselle, Ill. Today, the company operates three branches in addition to its Illinois headquarters. Two are based in the United States in New York City and Pleasant Grove, Utah; the third is located in Bristol, U.K.
NMI stated it employs over 180 staff members and processes $45 billion in payments per year, supporting more than 1,000 technology partners and 110,000 merchants in industries such as ecommerce, retail, medical, nonprofit, hospitality, parking and vending.
Technology for payment providers
NMI provides enablement technology to companies within the payments ecosystem. This community includes ISOs, value added resellers (VARs), independent software vendors (ISVs) and payment facilitators (payfacs).
NMI offers partners access to its Unified Commerce Enablement Platform, which is an omnichannel payment gateway that allows users to provide self-branded gateway services to merchants across all channels without a need to build or maintain in-house technology.
The platform features a multitiered hierarchy structure, 165+ processor connections and 175+ third-party integrations. Additionally, NMI offers Payment Facilitator Technology, FACe, which includes instant onboarding, automated sub-merchant management, know-your-customer data tracking, automated chargebacks activity and consolidated reporting, NMI noted.
Unified commerce enablement
NMI's growth focus is on unified commerce enablement. It is NMI's belief that the unification of commerce is a vital step for today’s fragmented payments landscape. In accordance, the firm built a simplified payments system that seamlessly recognizes all merchant points of engagement, including online, in-store, mobile and self-service.
NMI launched its proprietary unified commerce enablement platform in October 2018, declaring it as one of the first to the payments industry. The platform uses a unified token to deliver a central view of the customer and payment data across all payment channels, enabling users to generate new revenue streams, simplify data structures and improve the customer experience. “Our unified commerce enablement platformoffers a plethora of payment device certifications, along with unmatched shopping cart integrations and processor connections that places our partners in a league of their own." Said NMI CEO Vijay Sondhi. "Add in tokenized payments data and the foundation is set for our partners to become a one-stop-shop for their merchants across all payments channels."
The product supports NMI's ambition to drive transformation in the payment industry through the power of unified commerce enablement. According to Sondhi, by unifying every point of payment engagement to deliver one view of the customer, NMI is enabling thousands of ISOs, fintech innovators, ISVs and VARs to break through existing technology barriers.
Fresh perspective
NMI's unified commerce focus vaulted with its acquisition of Creditcall in March 2018, positioning the firm to serve both the ecommerce and brick-and-mortar markets. Sondhi lauded the acquisition, stating, "Creditcall's card-present acumen combined with NMI's card-not-present expertise enables us to bring to market the first truly omnichannel gateway platform." Following the Creditcall acquisition, NMI also took steps to rebrand its logo and website. According to Lisa Pulchalski, NMI marketing director, the letters N, M and I were incorporated into the mark "to represent NMI's commitment to unified commerce enablement, and the new colors bring a strong, but refreshing, look to an industry saturated by blues."
