Pocket-sized mobile printers

Star Micronics America Inc., the subsidiary of Japan-based small terminal manufacturer Star Micronics Co. Ltd., recently launched its first Apple Inc. MFi-certified portable printer. The SM-S220i printer now supports Apple, Windows Corp. and Google Inc. Android operating systems, as well as the Bluetooth SPP protocol, making it a handy companion for today's most popular mobile platforms, the company said.

Christophe Naasz, Director of Business Development, Star Micronics America, said the company is "a long-time supporter" of Apple products, as well as a leader in POS printer products. "[I]t was important to support our partners by offering a mobile solution for the new markets created by the advance of tablet computing," he stated.

"Nearly all of the customers in the markets we serve are looking for some type of mobile solution, often involving products from Apple, and this new printer is the ideal solution for mobility."

The SM-S220i interfaces with Apple iPod, iPhone and iPad devices. Its LCD backlit unit was designed to help merchants with line busting and mobile merchants seeking a lightweight, easy to load printer that can print 2-inch invoices and receipts at a rate of about 3 inches per second. To extend battery life, the unit has an automatic sleep mode.

Appetize LLC, a developer of merchandise, food and beverage ordering applications, teamed with Star Micronics to pair Appetize's app with the SM-S220i for processing orders at major concert and sport venues in California and New York. "We believe this kind of mobile technology will soon be featured in all entertainment venues, and we are happy to be leading the way," Naasz stated.

Star Micronics has since launched the SM-T300i with similar features as the 220i, including Apple MFi certification. The unit prints standard, 3-inch receipts common in most retail environments. According to Star Micronics, the SM-T300i allows restaurant servers and clerks in demanding retail and hospitality environments to print receipts wherever they need to.

Each unit in the series is IP54 certified, meaning they're ruggedly built and water resistant. A larger print format was developed for law enforcement to use in issuing e-citations. Star Micronics is currently ranked among the Top 50 "Most Stable" Japanese companies on the Nikkei exchange, and it has an established network of ISOs through its American subsidiary.
