At this year's Transact 14: Powered by ETA conference held in Las Vegas during April, VeriFone Inc. unveiled the newest member of the VX Evolution platform. VeriFone stated its palm-sized VX 690 POS system has Europay/MasterCard/Visa-chip processing capability, as well as three-way Bluetooth, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity for processing payments in multiple retail environments.
"It is no secret that merchants increasingly want a user experience that parallels that of a consumer electronics device," said Bill Nelson, Executive Vice President of Global Product for VeriFone. "The VX 690 achieves this goal while providing 3G connectivity that is critical in many markets where 2G networks are transitioning to 3G." For example, in North America, Australia and parts of Asia, 3G is increasingly required for mobile payment acceptance.
The VX 690 provides dual subscriber identity module (SIM) functionality so merchants can quickly connect to different networks or switch networks to ensure uninterrupted service. VeriFone also noted the unit's enhanced GPS tracking system makes it possible to track transactions by location, giving merchants increased visibility into business operations and inventory, or even monitor sales territories.
According to VeriFone, at the user level the VX 690 has the bandwidth to support graphics, product images and streaming videos on a 3.5-inch capacitive touch-screen display, along with the audio capability of streaming messages. As merchants grow, they can tap into the unit's integrative peripheral capabilities to add barcode readers, biometric scanners, printers and other equipment.
In addition, the VX 690 capabilities include the following:
- Dual SIM functionality ensures uninterrupted service.
- GPS system tracks transactions in multiple locations.
- PCI PTS 3.0 certification delivers advanced security.
- Multiple peripheral capacity allows integration with other devices.
- Near field communication capability supports contactless and mobile wallet payments.
VeriFone also noted that like other devices in VeriFone's VX Evolution series, the VX 690 supports the company's VeriShield Total Protect program for end-to-end encryption and tokenization. Secured by RSA, VeriShield is designed to eliminate usable data from the entire data lifecycle.
