Letter from the editors

2015 has been another vibrant year in payments. The Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) Oct. 1 liability shift spurred tangible movement toward chip card adoption in the United States after years of inaction. Strong mobile payment initiatives entered the fray to compete against Apple Pay and others for a share of the market. Other key issues have included cybersecurity, interchange litigation, significant initial public offerings and the pursuit of real-time payments. This issue's lead article explores the effect all of these have had on our sphere.

As part of our ongoing coverage of the U.S. EMV migration, we include a feature offering European perspectives on what we can expect here as our EMV rollout proceeds, as well as an educational article explaining why EMV is effective and what the liability shift means to merchants who experience breaches under various circumstances. Other articles by contributing writers take a look at what the industry's feet on the street expect in the coming year, discuss why e-commerce merchants' risk factors need to be examined more than ever before, and explore the question of whether new payment schemes are poised to bump the major card brands aside.

In news we report on Target Corp.'s $39 million settlement with MasterCard Worldwide; the Federal Trade Commission's ban of telemarketers' practice of using remotely created checks, remotely created payment orders and prepaid card cash reload mechanisms; early reports from this year's holiday shopping season indicating an increase in e-commerce activity worldwide; and the spread of Black Friday and Cyber Monday from day-long events to week-long and season-long promotions.

Also included are news briefs on various legal and government actions; industry research; and company expansions, accolades, new product launches, strategic partnerships and acquisitions, and key appointments. In addition herein are features on mobile commerce growth in China and beginning signs of U.S. penetration into that market, and insights on how financial services are being redesigned for Millennials.

In this last letter to you in 2015, we want to thank you, our readers, as well as our fine contributing writers and media partners whose support makes it possible for us to be a premiere educational resource for those who work faithfully on behalf of merchants large and small in a multitude of verticals.
