Letter From the Editors

Jason Oxman, Chief Executive Officer of the Electronic Transactions Association, recently shared with The Green Sheet an insight about technology in payments today. "We know that technology as a whole is a crucial component of payment services, and not having a technology solution is telling your customer that you don't want to keep them around for the long term," he said. "I think that's the most important lesson out of technology."

In this issue's lead article, you'll find more of Oxman's thoughts on the challenges and rewards of technology implementation, as well as those of a number of payments industry leaders who have successfully learned to work with independent software vendors and others to integrate cutting-edge solutions that offer knowledge and convenience to merchants in ways not possible just a few years ago. They've shared their experiences with technology development and integration to help others in the payments community who are considering doing the same.

Speaking of technology, this issue contains an insider's view of the recent Money20/20 show in Las Vegas, which in just four years has become a major venue where tech startups show their wares, payments and tech industry leaders connect with potential partners, investors evaluate new technologies, and attendees find inspiration for enhancing the products and services they offer. Also, for your reading pleasure and inspiration, we've included industry expert perspectives and advice on the risky business of processing payments for the cannabis industry, developments on the unbanked and underbanked front, how to determine what type of merchant best suits your business, what it takes to be an effective technology salesperson, and trends to watch for in 2017.

In the news, we've included an early report on expected 2016 year-end holiday spending and trends, actions federal agencies are taking in response to escalating cyberattacks and dependence on connected technologies, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to hear a case regarding surcharging on credit card transactions, and the unsuccessful efforts on the part of ATM operators to delay the EMV liability shift due to a severe supply chain issue.
