Letter from the editors

While payments professionals are aware that mobile, Wi-Fi, internet and landline innovations are facilitating new forms of connected commerce, there's often scant time in a busy workday to delve deeply into what's brewing behind the scenes in this realm. Thus, The Green Sheet asked payments leaders for insights on how telco service providers and partnering companies are reinventing their processes and offerings. This issue's lead article shares their perspectives and examines how merchant level salespeople (MLSs) can leverage new and transforming resources.

The Electronic Transactions Association is another kind of resource, and one contributor shares reflections on the ETA's recent Transact Tech conference in San Francisco. Other topics explored by industry experts include the increase in mobile payment usage; effects of consolidation in the industry and what ISOs and MLSs can do about it; why merchant education is critical to combating rampant growth in chargebacks; questions for MLSs to consider to sharpen skills and move sales interactions in more profitable directions; and how fathers of daughters joining the industry are endeavoring to level the payments playing field for women.

Recent news stories highlighted herein include PayPal's $4 billion payment for Honey Science, a technology firm that develops browser add-ons that automatically find and apply coupon codes for member shoppers at participating online stores; EMVCo's enhancement of its EMVCO Associates Program to attract more like-minded organizations to its ongoing discussions and initiatives; Facebook and Google's separate plans to broaden their reach with new payment and banking services; Elavon's definitive agreement to acquire Sage Pay, a U.K.-based payment gateway and division of The Sage Group, a cloud solutions provider; and Arkose Labs' Q4 Fraud and Abuse Report," which cited a 70 percent increase in bot-driven account fraud.
