Readers Speak : Seeking advice for 2020

I had a pretty good year overall in 2019, but I didn't quite reach my income goals in spite of being more focused and action oriented than ever before. If you could give me just one piece of advice on what to do differently in 2020, what would it be?
Rex Moreau, Merchant Level Salesperson
Rex,
Not knowing anything about your target market, partners, industry and product knowledge, and current business and sales practices, it would be impossible to offer one salient piece of advice. I can, however, suggest the following:
- Get support. Find a knowledgeable mentor or colleague who can help you assess your current situation, set new goals and check in with you regularly to see what's going well and where you need to make adjustments. Also, join the MLS Forum, which you can access via the Forums tab at www.greensheet.com.
- Get involved. Attend industry tradeshows to learn about current industry trends, new products and services, and effective sales approaches, as well as meet potential new colleagues and partners. Also, join industry associations and community organizations, attend meetings and lend hand.
- Get educated. Focus on your ongoing education by reading The Green Sheet and other industry publications, tuning into the Merchant Sales Podcast, attend webinars, trainings offered by your ISO, as well as educational programs offered by Bankcard Life, the Electronic Transactions Association, Field Guide Enterprises and other organizations dedicated to the advancement of the industry's feet on the street.
Here's hoping you take your business to new heights in 2020, reach your income goals and have newfound insights to share with others in the field at this time next year.
