A Thing Checks With No Strings

Checks With No Strings Attached

Wireless card terminals have been in the news quite a bit lately. In fact, we are preparing a special report on wireless terminals to be released later this year. But, what about check customers who visit kiosks, sidewalk sales, etc. Are they to be turned away because they prefer to pay with paper rather than plastic?

Not anymore. CrediPort Systems Inc., of Syracuse, N.Y. has just released the first wireless check reader, the CrediPort Safechek. The check reader is combined with their cellular wireless credit card verification system.

The patent pending CrediPort Safechek consists of a Lipman 3000 terminal/printer, a Welch Allyn check reader, a rechargeable battery, and a 3 watt Motorola analog cellular phone packaged in a nylon carrying case. The unit measures 11.5” x 9” x 5” and weighs under 9.5 lbs. Tom Huegel, Director of Sales and Marketing for CrediPort says, “This check reader gives expanded meaning to our trademark Cell more with a CrediPort. . . it is really a complete mobile office.”

The Safechek operates on the analog cellular system and is fully functional. The terminal and check reader are certified on virtually all of the processing platforms in the U.S. When the system is delivered to a merchant by a bank, processor, or ISO, it is already cellular-enabled and credit card/check ready.

Nationwide Business Services participated in testing of the wireless Safechek. Norm Rancourt, V.P. states, “The CrediPort wireless check reader has enabled us to tap into brand new markets. We are presently supplying many markets including auctioneers and trade show merchants. It is truly a major piece in our offering of check verification, conversion, truncation, and guarantee.”
