Letters to the Editor

Hi:

Yesterday I sent you an e-mail regarding National City Check and how I might get in touch with them. I found their name in your article dated 96:01:02 under “the prior issues” search. The title of the article was “National City Check Using Credit Information to Authorize Checks.”

However, you did not list contact information, which is what I am looking for. Do you know their phone number? (a.k.a. National City Processing Company).

Regards, Mel Livengood
American Merchant Services

Dear Mel,

National City Processing Company is also known as NPC, or National Processing Company. In early 1999 NPC sold their check services to International Payment Services.

Following are some recent Green Sheet articles that may help:

99:03:01 “NPC Check Services for Sale”

99:05:02 “NPC Check Services”

99:10:02 “Buyback”

99:12:02 “The New NPC”

NPC can be found online. NPC is located at 1231 Durrett Lane, Louisville, KY 40213. They can be reached by calling (800) 672-1964 or e-mailing.

To The Green Sheet:

It should be noted that one of your advertisers (Merchant Bankcard Network) turned out to be another ISO with only one thing in mind.... lining their pockets on the backs of the street people and take off.

This ISO said nothing about closing up but then sells his portfolio, changes his phone numbers, and takes off leaving us all in the hole.

Our merchants are PO’d and the salespeople got stuck with worthless buyouts, phones aren’t answered, and customers are now looking at the sales reps to make good.

Check your principles before you allow them to advertise. In many cases you will find they’ve done this before, as we found out too late.

Dear Anonymous:

The Green Sheet advertising is paid advertising. The Green Sheet does not recommend or endorse any product or service. As we have written, ISOs must do their homework before signing any contract.

Good Selling,

To The Green Sheet:

Thank you so much for the information that you provide to us each month in The Green Sheet. I look forward to each issue.

My name is Beth Harrison and I am in the Financial Services industry. I have recently been made aware of a new product, Electronic Online Checks. Do you have anything to report regarding this new form of electronic processing? What I have read indicates that the market will be huge because of the population that cannot, or will not, use credit cards. Statistics vary, but somewhere between 40 to 50% of the population cannot purchase merchandise over the Internet.

What do you know?

Thank you,

Beth Harrison
Eagle U.S. Financial Services

Dear Beth:

CrossCheck has a solution called ChecksByNet. They also have CheckNow for phone and fax orders. (Some recent articles on this product are in issues 99:04:01 and 00:01:02).

Regarding the percentage of the population that has each payment method, our book Checks at the End of the 20th Century. . . and Beyond! has data from a 1999 survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp. (The book is available by calling 800-757-4441 or logging on to Amazon.com.) That survey found the following:

88% of the population have a checking account

76% of the population have a credit card

61% of the population have an ATM card

42% of the population have a debit card

6% of the population have none of the above

As far as check use, according to Chain Store Age 84% of consumers expect their check use to stay the same or increase.

What part of the country are you in? I believe The Green Sheet seminars, especially the presentation on check services, will answer many questions for you. The last two are in New York on June 9 and Los Angeles on July 7.
