A Thing CR 1000i Enables Check Conversion

CRI 1000i Enables Check Conversion

On another VeriFone note, the company recently introduced the VeriFone CR 1000i, a check reader/imager for multi-lane retail merchants. The three features of the VeriFone CR 1000i that enable check conversion at the POS are:

¥          dual interface capabilities

¥          advanced imaging technologies

¥          a user-friendly design that minimizes training and errors

NACHA hosted the Electronic Check Conference September 11-12 in New Orleans and if you were there you know that the recurring question was not "How do we make checks electronic?" but rather "How do we get merchants to use electronic checks?" The CR1000i is one tool that VeriFone hopes will facilitate the transition.

The VeriFone CR 1000i marks VeriFone's entry into the check-conversion marketplace. The dual interface capabilities allow retailers to connect the CR 1000i to a POS system or electronic cash register, or if they prefer, to an Ethernet-based local area network. What this means is that the CR 1000i can become a drop-in replacement for an existing MICR-only check reader in a legacy POS environment. Therefore, the merchant saves money and does not have to retrain cashiers.

The CR 1000i employs three intelligent imaging algorithms to optimize the size of the check image data. These capabilities eliminate the background images (the designs on the check) and focus on the key quadrants of the check. Industry-standard compression techniques are employed to make the data faster and easier to store and transmit.

How it Works

The VeriFone CR 1000i is specially suited to enable multi-lane retail merchants to conduct check conversion. The clerk feeds the check through the CR 1000i. As the check passes through the device, a censor captures a 300-dpi, black-and-white image of the check, while MICR-encoded information is read concurrently. The customer signs an authorization slip recognizing that the check transaction has been converted into a digital transaction. The used check is handed back to the customer. From that point on, the check is a digital file.

". . .the VeriFone CR 1000i represents an enormous opportunity for VeriFone to reaffirm its leadership position in check-conversion solutions," said John Selep, product line manager at VeriFone. "The VeriFone CR 1000i reliably extends the benefits of check conversion by offering multi-lane retailers connectivity and configuration flexibility that make it easy to integrate into an existing POS environment," Selep continued.

VeriFone provides secure electronic-payment solutions for financial institutions, merchants, and consumers. The division has shipped more than seven million electronic-payment systems, which are used in more than 100 countries.
