All of these companies are part of the Schlumberger Business Associate
Program, which was started six years ago and boasts more than 50 business
partners today. Schlumberger works with technology and market leaders that
are unique and/or have a strong loyal customer base, like Schlumberger
itself.
According to Paul Beverly, vice president of Schlumberger Smart Cards, "We
see two levels of relationships. The first types are companies who provide
market access, a channel for our smart card products and services. The
second type of relationship involves companies whose solutions and
technologies we are able to bundle and sell to key markets."
Of particular interest to the ISO community is the MagIC line of
Schlumberger products.
The MagIC 6000 was specifically designed as a desktop POS terminal.
Possessing capabilities as a smart card reader - with built-in device
standards, EMV certified and ISO compliant - as well as a Magstripe reader,
the MagIC 6000 has a backlit graphics display and is compact and ergonomic
- a small footprint using little counter space.
Its technology encompasses a thermal infrared printer as well as a
multitask operating system with built-in firewalling. Another plus for
MagIC 6000: When other applications are added onto the terminal, there's no
need for recertification of the apps.
The MagIC 9000 is a wireless POS terminal incorporating many of the same
features as the MagIC 6000. Additionally, this state-of-the-art device
works off of Mobitech as well as infrared capabilities. Schlumberger has
installed between 50,000 and 100,000 MagIC POS terminals in the United
States. And worldwide? That figure jumps to 700,000!
Depending on configurations, the MagIC 6000 sells for about $400, and the
price tag for the MagIC 9000 is around $800.
Schlumberger believes that not only can ISOs differentiate themselves with
the MagIC line, they also can offer the all-important loyalty applications
with the smart card functionality to their merchants that are featured in
Schlumberger technology.
Schlumberger is headquartered in New York with more than 8,000 employees in
more than 40 countries and an impressive year 2000 revenue of $1.4 billion
in smart card solutions. Schlumberger Test & Transactions is a business
segment of Schlumberger Ltd., a global technology services company with
$9.6 billion in revenue last year.
