Sci Fi Approach
Banks are testing technology to fight fraud. First Union Bank of Florida, for example, has a pilot program in some cities - none in South Florida - that uses a computer-chipped bank card with the customer's photo.
But some technology that might fight fraud is considered too intrusive. Robert Rasor, deputy assistant director of the Secret Service, says his agency has been nudging the banking industry toward biometrics: "fingerprint cards, retina scanning-things that will not allow a transaction unless it's really you... There's no way to beat that."
But bankers recoil at the thought of asking customers to submit to such measures, says First Union investigator Hank Davis: "They feel some things will not be acceptable to the public." (No kidding!!!)
