Self-Insured Check Acceptance
Outside the most basic payment systems of barter, coin, and
currency which have developed since ancient times, the check is one
of the world's oldest and most versatile forms of payment.
Many retailers accept checks every day without the assistance of
either Guarantee or Verification companies. Some of these retailers
will use the services of a collection company when they get a bad
check, and many others will attempt collection themselves.
One of the many ways that retailers will attempt to effect
collection is to file suits for those bad check writers who ignore
their collection calls.
This has become a very high volume problem for courts to handle,
and we found the recent story in Kansas an interesting solution to
this growing problem.
A Kansas court recently provided a "speedy trial" for hundreds of
such cases. As reported in the May 20 edition of Lawyers Weekly USA,
the Shawnee County Court recently handled 900 cases in two hours by
setting up processing stations in a large exposition hall.
At each station, the debtor was asked to complete a form to agree
or disagree with the process, or to plead no contest to the debt. At
other stations, they were assisted in setting up payment plans for
restitution.
Of course, the "alleged debtor" could opt for his/her day in
court, prolonging the wait for the person awaiting restitution.
Reading this story makes one realize what a great Check Guarantee
sales opportunity this process could have been for the right sales
professional
