Internet Fraud
As part of a crackdown on fraudulent credit services businesses,
the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has halted the operations of a
Jacksonville, FL, telemarketer who used the Internet to promise
consumers credit cards or loans for an advance fee.
On August 13, the FTC announced its settlement with Johnny Ray
Dunn of Jacksonville, FL, that requires he pay a $3,500 fine. The
consent judgment also bans Dunn from engaging in the marketing or
sale of credit services for advance fees and misrepresenting any
business he operates as an independent consumer protection agency.
According to the FTC, Dunn advertised VISA cards and loans with
'no credit check' on the Internet. The complaint filed against Dunn
said consumers were charged an advance fee, and instead of receiving
loans or credit cards, consumers received lists of companies offering
loans, along with self-help credit materials, such as how to get a
credit card.
