Fed Issues New Bill
Another installment in The Green Sheet's on-going efforts
to keep bringing you information that will make you an expert in the
field on Payment Systems:
The Federal Reserve and Treasury have announced the release of a
new $50 bill. The bill includes new and modified security features
and is designed for easier recognition by people with visual
impairments.
The new note follows the release of the newly designed $100 note.
The Secret Service reports that the new $100 bill was counterfeited
1/18 as often as older bills, yet represents 1/3 of all $100 bills in
circulation.
Some of the new bill's features are:
- Large dark "50" on a light background
- Large portrait, off center
- Watermark to the right of the portrait of the same historical
figure as the portrait (Watermark can only be seen when held up to
light)
- Security thread to the right of the portrait that glows yellow
when exposed to Ultraviolet light in a dark environment. "USA
Fifty" and a flag are printed on the thread.
- Color shifting ink in the number on the lower right hand
corner of the bill front that changes from green to black when
viewed from different angles
All consequent denominations will include the low-vision features,
as will the redesign of the $100 note. The new $50 bill will be
issued this fall and a redesigned $20 will be released next year.
