In our last
issue, we reported that DigiCash has filed for bankruptcy. Some
people tend to compare them with CyberCash, but the two are actually
quite different. CyberCash's goal is not to create a new currency.
They do have a coin product that is in use in other countries but
they don't view themselves as being in the currency business. They
also do not create Web sites, nor do they handle bill presentment.
OK, we know what they DON'T do, so what DO they do?
CyberCash is
in the payments business and, as you may recall, in April of 1998,
CyberCash and ICVERIFY merged to create an efficient migration path
for payment transactions in both the physical and virtual worlds.
They have a variety of products which facilitate payments in the
virtual and physical world, but most of the time you won't even be
aware that you are using a CyberCash product or
service.
