National
Check Cashers Association
More than 1,500 of
the nation's check cashers (organizations rapidly replacing
traditional banking services throughout the U.S.) attended the 11th
annual conference and exposition of the National Check Cashers
Association (NaCCA) in Las Vegas recently.
NaCCA was created
in 1986 and has more than 3,500 members but it is estimated that
there are more than 6,000 licensed check cashers in the U.S. that
cash checks worth more than $55 billion. In addition to cashing
payroll, Social Security, public assistance, and governmental checks,
NaCCA members also offer electronic bill payments, transit cards, and
tokens. Their facilities provide additional benefits including fax,
auto license, money order, public utility payment, notary public, and
EBT payment services.
"Giving Back to
the Community" was selected as the main theme of the conference. In
addition to the focus on community service, the conference provided a
forum for debate on the issues and events guiding the course of the
$55-billion check cashing industry.
Key components of
the conference schedule included:
- Organization's
new name: The NaCCA's new name, National Association of Financial
Service Centers, Inc. (NAFSC) was officially
unveiled.
- Payday
Advances (also known as Deferred Deposit): The legal, business,
and political aspects of the pay day advances were addressed by
regulators, prominent check cashers, and
lobbyists.
- Check Cashing
in the New Millennium: Industry leaders, including representatives
from Money Tree Inc., Dollar Financial Group, and ACE Cash Express
led a panel discussion on the future of the check cashing
industry.
"With the myriad
of issues affecting our industry, this annual conference has evolved
into a major event that plays a key role in the financial services
industry," said NaCCA Chairman Abby L. Hans. "As we recognize the
vital role we play in our communities, launch our new name, pool our
intellectual resources on the subject of deferred deposit and assess
the future of our industry, this promises to be a landmark
year."
