RS2 outlines BIN Sponsorship 2.0 model for the next era of embedded finance

New RS2 white paper defines how full-stack sponsorship, unified processing and platform technology are creating a new growth model for fintechs, banks, platforms and PayFacs

FRANKFURT, Germany, June 2, 2026 – RS2, a Tier-1 global provider of cloud-native payment processing infrastructure and payment technology solutions, today released a new white paper, Fintech Enablement 2.0: Scaling Payments Without Borders, examining how BIN sponsorship is evolving from a regulatory shortcut into a strategic operating model for the next generation of payments businesses.

The white paper argues that the payments market is being reshaped by a structural shift: more organisations want to become payments businesses, but fewer want to become regulated financial institutions. Fintechs want to launch cards, marketplaces want to embed payouts and acceptance, software platforms want to monetise payments, and banks want to expand issuing and acquiring capabilities without the cost, rigidity and complexity of legacy infrastructure.

First-generation BIN sponsorship helped solve the market access problem. BIN Sponsorship 2.0, as defined by RS2, addresses the scale challenge by combining regulated sponsorship with unified issuing and acquiring technology, enterprise-grade processing, real-time orchestration and operational control within a single integrated environment.

“BIN sponsorship is no longer simply a licence wrapper,” said Radi El Haj, CEO at RS2. “It is becoming an entry point into a unified payments ecosystem that combines market access, operational control and scalable processing infrastructure.”

The white paper identifies four groups expected to benefit most from this next phase of market development.

For fintechs and digital banks, full-stack sponsorship removes the need to build regulated infrastructure independently, allowing them to focus on product innovation, customer acquisition and growth. For platforms, marketplaces and embedded finance providers, it creates a route to deliver payout cards, merchant acceptance and financial services without becoming regulated institutions themselves.

For PayFacs and ISVs, sponsored acquiring creates greater ownership of the merchant relationship and provides a foundation for value-added services including lending, analytics, loyalty, dynamic pricing and flexible settlement. For banks and financial institutions, sponsorship models represent both a defensive and offensive opportunity, helping institutions monetise their regulatory position while participating more actively in embedded finance ecosystems.

At the centre of RS2’s position is its Platform + Processing + Licensing model, delivered through BankWORKS®, its cloud-native issuing and acquiring platform; RS2 SmartProcessing®, its enterprise-grade processing capability; and Beyond by RS2®, which provides EMI licensing, BIN sponsorship and regulatory enablement.

The white paper argues that many providers address only one part of the challenge, offering issuing but not acquiring, or processing but not licensing, leaving clients to manage fragmented vendor relationships across the payments stack. RS2’s integrated model is designed to remove that complexity by bringing technology, processing and licensing together within one operating framework.

“The payments industry is entering a new infrastructure era,” added El Haj. “Businesses no longer want fragmented operating models where licensing, processing and operational control sit across multiple providers. They want infrastructure that allows them to launch quickly, scale internationally and embed payments seamlessly into digital products and platforms.”

The white paper concludes that sponsored access is not the end state, but the foundation. Once organisations are live, competitive advantage shifts to how effectively they manage risk, optimise approval rates, personalise merchant services, automate settlement and turn transaction data into commercial value.

RS2 positions BIN Sponsorship 2.0 as the beginning of a broader journey from access, to control, to intelligence-led growth.
