Walgreens launches GPR card

National drug store chain Walgreens entered the prepaid card industry with its own general purpose reloadable card. Walgreens said the Balance Financial Prepaid MasterCard will offer a phased launch of integrated financial services over the coming months.

Currently, the card is available in over 250 Walgreens locations in Detroit, Milwaukee and Nashville, Tenn., with a nationwide rollout expected before year's end and additional financial services being added to the card in 2014.

The Balance Financial Card program is managed by Galileo Processing, with transactions processed by FIS Global. The Western Union Co. is also a partner in the venture, with Western Union money transfer and bill payment services expected to be added to the program in 2014.

Walgreens cited the roughly 60 million adults in the United Sates who are financially underserved, or not served at all. "In bringing together leading financial services partners, we have developed an easier way for millions of customers to manage their money in-store, online or with a mobile device," said Jason Dubinsky, Walgreens Vice President and Treasurer. "On top of the convenience and robust features, the ability to earn Balance Rewards points makes this service uniquely valuable to our customers."

Cardholders can earn 10 Balance Rewards points for every $1 spent at Walgreens or Duane Reade stores; 1,000 points for the first direct deposit; and more points for in-store reloads and monthly direct deposits. The card also offers reloading at over 8,100 Walgreens or Duane Reade locations, as well as no-fee ATM withdrawals at those locations. end of article
