Consistent with the conference theme, the concept of reusable identity took center stage at the show, modeling approaches to authenticating once, instead of repeatedly, when transitioning between apps and platforms.
The 2023 Identiverse Trends Report, published March 2023, described reusable identity as the practice of using a single digital identity to access multiple services and applications, explaining that a user can authenticate themselves once and then access all the services that are linked to their identity without having to re-enter their credentials each time.
"Reusable identity is typically achieved through the use of identity federation, which allows different systems and applications to recognize and trust the same digital identity," Identiverse researchers wrote. "Identity federation uses standards such as SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) or OAuth (Open Authorization) to enable the sharing of authentication and authorization information between systems."
Researchers further noted that the reusable identity market is valued at $32.8 billion, with potential to grow at 68.9 percent CAGR by 2027, according to Liminal's Reusable Identity Trends Report, issued in February 2022.
Identiverse researchers commended FIDO Alliance for creating passkeys in 2022, calling the technology a major step forward in secure authentication. Passkeys will clearly be a gateway to a "passwordless" internet, they stated, by facilitating a simpler, safer online customer journey. Based on FIDO standards, passkeys enable users to securely sign in once and transact across multiple devices and platforms, according to FIDO Alliance representatives.
During the Identiverse conference, FIDO released passkey user experience (UX) guidelines developed by its UX Working Group and designed to help passkey scale. FIDO presented the guidelines at an Identiverse session on optimizing UX for passkeys, explaining how they can help service providers deliver a consistent, enjoyable user experience.
Kevin Goldman, chair of the FIDO Alliance UX Working Group and chief experience officer at Trusona, told the audience that UX is a critical component in driving passkey adoption, stating the new guidelines "will help online service providers design a better, more consistent user experience when signing in with passkeys and ultimately maximize adoption."
Andrew Shikiar, executive director and CMO of the FIDO Alliance, agreed that UX is a driving force in the global movement to passwordless authentication.
"Passkeys uniquely can provide a phishing-resistant sign-in as well as a superior user experience which can drive top-line growth by enabling more seamless access to online services and engendering stronger brand affinity," Shikiar stated. "We encourage online service providers to use these guidelines in their journey to rolling out passkeys to ensure a consistent, thoughtful, and simple user experience for their users."

In addition, FIDO Alliance will host a three-part webinar series on UX guidelines for passkeys. Attendees will get actionable tools to accelerate and optimize deployments of passkeys for consumer sign-ins. Webinars include:
