There were four days during the week ending Dec. 18, 2011 when online spending exceeded $1 billion in sales, comScore said. In that week there were more than $6.3 billion in sales alone – a 14 percent improvement over the previous year. Altogether there were 10 days that surpassed $1 billion in online sales during this season.
A sample of some of the biggest online sales days shows double digit improvements over the previous year. Thanksgiving had $479 million in sales – an 18 percent improvement over 2010. Black Friday saw $816 million in sales, a 26 percent increase over 2010. Cyber Monday counted more than $1.07 billion in sales, a 14 percent increase over 2010.
Results from First Data Corp.'s First Data SpendTrend Mid-Month Flash analysis confirmed December appeared to hold its own for all retailers in 2011 compared to the same period in 2010. It found card spending was stronger in the first two weeks of December 2011 than it was in the same period in 2010 with credit card growth rates moving into double digits.
Chase Paymentech Solutions LLC's Cyber Holiday Pulse Index reported year-to-year sales growth of 25 percent and transaction growth of 36 percent in 2011. Average tickets were down eight percent.
