Letter from the editor
he 40th anniversary of The
Green Sheet Inc. is coming up
this October, and to celebrate
T our decades of service to the
dynamic payments industry, we will be publishing a
series of articles that will provide retrospectives that
dig into various aspects of our multifaceted industry.
Some retrospectives will be lead articles; others may
be found in Inspiration, Readers Speak or other sec-
tions of the magazine.
The inaugural article in our retrospective surveys the
industry's origins from BankAmericard to the rise
of Visa and Mastercard to interchange disputes and
oversight efforts. Those who were there during the
industry's early days will be reminded of the long-
forgotten Zon Jr. and knuckle busters of yore. Those
new to the industry will see just how far we've come.
Contributing writers have long been an essential part
of The Green Sheet family, consistently providing
insights and information that only insiders can con-
vey. In this issue experts discuss how understanding
third party registration rules helps acquirers posi-
tion all stakeholders to minimize costs, liability and
compliance headaches; success in business is often at-
tributed to hard work and business politics, but more
is going on under the surface—like body language,
which can have a huge impact on your career; the role
of payments in the automotive industry, which brings
together the latest technology and effective conve-
nience for drivers and passengers; implications of
the FTC's approval of a final consent order resolving
allegations in its complaint against Mastercard; and
the need for large enterprises to understand the chal-
lenges of adopting payment capabilities so they can
provide a seamless payment experience.
Recent news stories highlighted herein include ATM
manufacturer Diebold Nixdorf's filing for Chapter 11
bankruptcy protection after reaching an agreement
with key financial stakeholders on debt restructur-
ing; a study commissioned by Discover that indicates
the fintech sector is well-positioned for continued
growth; momentum building in Washington for the
Credit Card Competition Act of 2023, which is basi-
cally a rehash of legislation introduced in the last
Congress by Senator Richard Durbin, D-Ill.; and the
Senate Banking Committee's conviction that compa-
nies behind two leading P2P payment apps should do
more to protect users from fraud.
You'll also find compelling product and company
profiles and updates on recent industry milestones.
