U.S. consumers will turn to mobile devices in impressive numbers for browsing and price comparisons this holiday season: more than 75 percent will be scrolling their bite-sized screens for deals, up from 58 percent during the 2015 winter holiday season, according to recent research. But when it comes to pressing those Buy buttons, most consumers aren't yet prepared to take that leap. However, that doesn't mean mobile payments aren't making great strides. Enticing options are proliferating, and it appears to be a matter of when, not if, all pieces of the mobile payments puzzle will be in place to take mobile payments fully into the mainstream. This issue's lead article details the latest mobile payment developments and what is likely to happen next.
Complementing the lead article is a feature discussing new findings from Javelin Strategy & Research and from Zenith indicating smartphone ecommerce is on the rise. Also gaining strength are the push for real-time payments and the promise of biometrics for better authentication, both of which are explored in our Views section. Independent software vendors are also a growing presence in payments, and you'll find herein a look at ISV-payment company partnerships.
Educational articles present substantive ideas and perspectives for the industry's feet on the street: the benefits of dropping high-pressure sales tactics and modeling yourself after a medical doctor instead; how to recognize and combat the various types of friendly fraud; the benefits of re-evaluating and changing the way you use time; and a look at what gateways do and what to watch for when contracting with gateway service providers.
The News section articles report on the increased number and sophistication of card-not-present fraud; a call to take specific steps to protect data this holiday season; what cannabis-related businesses in California are doing to comply with bank, taxation and payment processing laws; and Vantiv's planned acquisition of Moneris USA. In addition, you'll find news briefs on significant industry and payment company milestones, relevant research, and new partnerships, acquisitions and appointments. And new product, industry leader and company profiles round out the mix.
