Chargebacks, an ongoing challenge for the payments realm, might soon take center stage in the travel, hospitality and events industries. Even before COVID-19 began to spread worldwide, chargebacks were described as a multibillion dollar threat to the integrity of card payments. And researchers estimated the number of transactions disputed annually would grow to 33 million by 2022. We cannot yet predict what sort of spike cancellations and disputed transactions stemming from the coronavirus might cause.
With that in mind, this issue's lead article delves into what we know about the overall chargeback landscape at this time; changing card brand rules governing them; disputes stemming from friendly fraud and card skimming; unique issues faced by the petroleum industry, which has yet to implement EMV; tools provided by Visa and Mastercard, such as Visa Transaction Advisor and MasterCom, to prevent and mitigate chargebacks; and common sense steps merchants can take when initiating transactions to deter chargebacks down the road.
Whether navigating the ongoing, dramatic evolution in payments or the temporary negative impacts of unforeseen events, one thing is clear: merchant level salespeople continue to thrive. This is the encouraging message from Impact PaySystem's Emily and Dee Karawadra in their final article as Street SmartsSM authors. Other experts contributing to this magazine offer further insights on reducing chargebacks via the Visa Merchant Purchase Inquiry program, the potential for facilitating faster payments at the POS, the need to build secure apps, and steps ISOs and MLSs can take to maximize their value.
