Evolving card brand rules and government regulations make deadlines an ongoing concern for ISOs, merchant level salespeople, payment processors, equipment vendors and many others doing business in the merchant services world. And given the amount of collaboration required to create what for consumers is basically a smooth payments experience, we depend on one another to do our part to meet requirements to stay compliant and in business.
One looming deadline that has been postponed more than once due to cost and complexity is the April 1, 2021, EMV liability shift for automated fuel dispensers (AFDs). A fact that could be seen as daunting is that according to research completed last summer, only 15 percent of fuel retailers with AFDs reported full deployment of EMV-compliant devices, and 52 percent had deployed zero EMV-compliant AFDs.
However, for enterprising payment professionals, this large group of petroleum retailers facing significant liability presents and opportunity. This issue's lead article delves into the current state of EMV deployment among those retailers and explains how ISOs and MLSs can help them become compliant, including methods that do not entail replacing or even retrofitting pumps.
While fuel dispensers present unique challenges, it's essential to remember some basics of how to sell, no matter what kind of merchant you're targeting. This point is brought home by one of our contributors who recounts one abysmal MLS who did everything wrong—a classic case of what not to do. Other industry experts have explored the new presidential administration's potential impacts on small businesses, the potential for doing well in the B2B payments sphere as long as you do not approach it in the same way as B2C, and the importance of relationships in building a business why it makes sense to use CRM tools.
