Letter from the editor

The Green Sheet Advisory Board reflects the diversity and dynamism within the payments industry. And their range of interests and experience is exemplified in the insights they share on issues of concern to our sphere. The fact that they serve on such a board and periodically address questions we ask them to help us empower and connect people working at all levels within the industry is a testament to their individual generosity and the spirit of cooperation found among payments professionals as a whole. The aphorism, a rising tide lifts all boats, couldn't be more apt.

Thus, we kick off 2023 with a Q&A with our advisory board. It brings forth views on what went well in 2022, and why; arresting new technology with potential to improve the payments experience; the state of data security and fraud prevention and what can be done to strengthen it; the most useful social media platforms; and the staying power of the industry's feet on the street and what ISOs and MLSs can do to ensure they continue to thrive.

One of our contributing writers also provides advice on how to thrive in 2023 by creating SMARTER goals, offering two additions to the acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic or Relevant, and Timely. Other experts featured herein discuss how the upcoming FedNow launch will ultimately unfold and impact the faster payments landscape, including payments organization and FI back-office operations; why merchants and acquirers must understand the MATCH system so they will not be terminated for cause; and how online fraud and uneven risk distribution are among the hurdles growing payment providers face in onboarding new merchants while mitigating risk.

In news briefs we highlight research findings indicating there is a dearth of gateways capable of processing buy now, pay later transactions, a payment method experiencing a dramatic rise; two studies indicating bank customers prioritize engagement; efforts underway to ensure a dormant bill that would dictate how credit card payments get routed remains that way; and expert opinions on potential fallout from the FTX implosion. You'll also find herein our customary updates and company and product profiles.
