Through the years, we've always done a year-end roundup for the final article of the year. We've found more ways to approach this than the 40 years we've been in business. We've looked at it through the lenses of advancements in technology, new business opportunities, challenges surmounted, milestones in the industry as a whole, results for the top acquirers, perspectives of industry leaders, new types of partnerships, new approaches to security, cutting-edge research, and more.
In this year's lead article, we've delved into highlights from 2023 from an array of areas in the industry, including key advancements in real-time payments, including the launch of FedNow, and their likely impact; interchange, as well as transaction routing under attack again, and the likely repercussions on merchants, consumers and service providers; the popularity of dual pricing models, which are unpopular with the card brands; the long arm of government agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; and the ever-present need to be vigilant about security.
All the advancements and information at our fingertips would be useless, however, if there were no skilled merchant level salespeople in our midst. And one contributor to this issue aims to help MLSs up their game by providing guidance on how to overcome sales objections. Other industry experts share knowledge herein on how advancements in tokenization can help merchants navigate challenges in an expanding ecommerce landscape; bloopers for merchants and their sales associates to avoid, particularly during peak shopping times; and why you should think twice about companies that brag about how trustworthy they are.
The fast-paced payments industry always gives us plenty of news to cover. In this issue we've highlighted stories on Verizon and Mastercard's expansion of their SMB offerings; results indicating the year-end shopping season's kickoff weekend exceeded expectations; the ending of the Apple-Goldman Sachs partnership; and the fintech sphere's ramp up of lending to low-income consumers.
