Optimize supply chain efficiency with ambient IoT

Product: IoT Visibility Platform
Company: Wiliot

Wiliot, an Internet of Things solutions provider, created an ambient IoT Pixels and Visibility Platform designed to optimize supply chain management by using pixels to connect digital and physical environments.

The company said some of the world's largest companies use the platform to attach stamp-sized, self-powered IoT Pixels to connect physical objects to the internet. Use cases include cars, appliances, shipping containers and crates as well as small contents such as fruits, vegetables, vaccine vials, clothes and airplane parts, stated Steve Statler, chief marketing officer at Wiliot.

"The ambient IoT represents an evolution of the traditional Internet of Things that brings connectivity and product intelligence from large, expensive things to almost everything," he said. "By embedding item-level intelligence into trillions of things and connecting these products through generative AI platforms, businesses are equipped with the real-time data they need to solve many of their most pressing challenges."

In addition to driving supply chain efficiencies, Statler noted, Wiliot can help enterprises reduce carbon emissions and enhance food and medicine safety. Wiliot-connected products transmit real-time, case and item-level information about location, temperature, humidity, and carbon footprint, he added, which helps companies make informed decisions while increasing revenue, improving safety and creating a more livable planet.

AI's central nervous system

Ambient IoT also acts as an extended nervous system for artificial intelligence, Statler explained, which helps businesses communicate with trillions of Wiliot-connected products through generative AI platforms from OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and others.

He pointed out that integrating ambient IoT and generative AI goes beyond passive supply chain visibility by enabling business leaders to address supply chain issues, fix bottlenecks and react quickly when, for example, vegetable containers exceed temperature thresholds—capabilities that help reduce a product's carbon footprint in real time.

Award-winning product

Statler noted that environmental sustainability and governance is a growing concern that has prompted an array of technical innovations coming to market in the next five years. Wiliot collaborates with many innovative companies, including leading retail, apparel, food and beverage, healthcare and postage carrier brands, he stated, adding that the company also partners with smart-tag manufacturers, including Avery Dennison, Identiv, and Tadbik Ato, to meet growing demand for its solutions.

In addition, he noted, Wiliot has been recognized by many of the world's most prestigious organizations, garnering the following citations: a TIME Best Invention Award, issued by TIME; a VIP Award, issued by the NRF; a GLOMO Award, issued by MWC; a Cool Vendor Award, issued by Gartner; and a Next Big Thing in Tech Award, issued by Fast Company in 2023.

Smart, sustainable solutions

As an ambient IoT data carrier platform company, Wiliot connects digital and physical realms by using IoT Pixels, battery-free smart tags that push data to the cloud in real-time without human intervention. The platform complements a fast-growing ambient IoT ecosystem and partners with a variety of distributors that specialize in building applications, tags, and edge devices, the company stated.

Describing Ambient IoT as an evolution of legacy IoT and RFID technologies with lower costs, end-to-end privacy and security, and the addition of new intelligence and sensing capabilities, Statler noted that the technology is compatible with a range of telecommunications standards, including Bluetooth, 5G Advanced, and 802.11 AMP.

"Our mission is to make every single thing an agent of change, enabling ambient IoT by adding intelligence and automation to food, apparel, packaging, pharmaceuticals, and other products," Statler said. "Connecting new categories of things through AI and the internet is transforming manufacturing, distribution, and product use to deliver on our vision: a minimum waste, full trust, perfectly timed world where people, profits, and the planet are aligned." end of article
