recently launched ePicPortz, a portal software that acts as the conduit
between those who use a POS terminal for Web access (instead of a PC) and
the Internet. In layman’s terms, ePicPortz turns a payment terminal into
a low-cost retail Web appliance.
ePicPortz
is significant because it is the payment industry’s first suite of
comprehensive security and gateway server software that enables
browser-equipped card payment terminals to interface to the Internet while
continuing to support conventional credit, debit, and e-cash transactions.
The software suite includes ePicReceipts, ePicWall, ePicCommerce, RealPay,
ShopHostz, ePicPack, and ePicMail. These software modules respectively
support Internet-based applications including:
•
electronic receipt capture
•
e-commerce to host gateway
•
e-commerce
•
hosted Web stores
•
on-screen advertising and coupons
•
e-mail
“It
[ePicPortz] brings the power of the Internet to the consumer and merchant
at the point-of-sale without all of the security risks commonly associated
with the Internet. ePicPortz servers act as secure gateways that interface
the Internet to terminals, Internet-based content providers, and financial
transaction processors,” said George Wallner, president and CEO of
Hypercom. ePicPortz is currently being rolled out with several major
banks, financial transaction processors, and ISPs.
On
a related note, in issue 99:12:01 we mentioned that telephony has
increased business opportunities as voice over Net and Web-based wireless
devices are now able to connect consumers to their financial resources at
any time and place. Well, on that note,
Hypercom and Inter-Tel Inc., are forming a new company, Cirilium
Corp. Cirilium is jointly owned and targeted at the Internet Protocol (IP)
Telephony service providers marketplace, which is expected to reach $1.6
billion by 2002.
According
to Wallner, “As IP voice quality has become commercially acceptable, the
requirements have shifted to duplicating the features of the existing
legacy telephone networks. Cirilium’s products combine Inter-Tel’s
rich telephony features with Hypercom’s carrier class VoIP gateways and
electronic payment technology to offer a turn-key IP telephony solution
that comes closest to duplicating the functioning of existing telephone
systems.”
We’re
all familiar with Hypercom but many readers may be less familiar with
Inter-Tel. Inter-Tel is a provider of digital business telephone systems,
IP telephony products, voice processing software, and long distance
calling services. For more information about Inter-Tel visit
www.inter-tel.com or call (602) 302-8900. For more information on
Hypercom visit www.hypercom.com.
