Freedom Ring
The
Liberty cell phone system, the first U.S.-based Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)
credit card processing application was released last month by World Products,
Inc., and Atomic Software, Inc. Now credit cards can be processed on a cell
phone.
The Liberty cell phone system
allows merchants to accept credit card payments from customers at almost any
place, using only their Internet-capable, WAP cell phones.
It works when the merchant
logs into the World Products PDA Money.net Web site via their WAP-enabled phone.
After logging in, the screen on a WAP device (the “card”) requests
information pertaining to the transaction. The credit card data is then routed
to the Atomic Software ecomPort gateway service that is connected to leading
credit card and check processors. The transaction is completed in seconds.
Additionally, the ecomPort service provides a merchant console to allow the
merchant access to real-time transaction reports from any Web browser.
The system has been developed
to be backwards-compatible with older WAP standards, thereby allowing most of
the Web-enabled phones released in the past year to work with this system.
Twelve manufacturers, including Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung, have
phones released in the U.S. that will work on the system; a total of
approximately 44 phone models are supported. The wireless system protocols that
are used by these phones are iDEN, CDMA, TDMA, CDPD, and GSM.
According to Robert Wallace,
president of World Products, there are two major benefits of the Liberty system.
“First, a merchant can now get real-time transaction approvals anywhere that
they can make a cell phone call. This allows them to sell products and services
without the fear of the credit card being declined after a customer has left.
This has become a major problem for businesses that try to accept credit cards
without instant verification. They accept the card, but later find out the card
is declined, over limit or stolen, leaving them without payment for products or
services provided. Secondly, the system also allows a merchant instant access
via a standard computer and Web browser to look up current and past
transactions, settlements, and monthly statements.”
“There are many merchants
who will be able to take advantage of this system,” stated Robert Brooks,
director of Wireless Products for Atomic Software. “This extends real-time
credit card approvals to many merchants who currently cannot get them and
therefore have to take a big risk on fraud.”
