MeshIQ report: 'Performance Benchmarks: Open-Source Messaging Brokers'

Plainview, N.Y. – July 21, 2026 – meshIQ, a leader in middleware observability and management, today announced its 2026 Performance Benchmarks: Open-Source Messaging Brokers report, a 75-page study designed to help enterprise architects, platform engineering and operations teams, and technology leaders evaluate platforms according to workload requirements. The findings show there is no universal performance leader, with Apache ActiveMQ, Apache Artemis, and RabbitMQ each excelling under different combinations of protocol, workload pattern, message size, concurrency, and batching.

As enterprises consider open-source messaging or evaluate which broker best fits their requirements, platform decisions are often shaped by broad performance claims that do not reflect how applications operate in diverse production environments, which combine open-source, commercial, cloud, and legacy technologies. To provide an architecture-specific comparison, meshIQ’s 2026 analysis narrows the field from seven platforms in its 2022 benchmark to three open-source message brokers, while substantially expanding the depth of testing applied to each.

The study separates JMS, native, and AMQP 1.0 paths and treats power-safe persistence and sent-versus-received reconciliation as baseline measurement requirements, allowing the results to expose the impact of client choice, transaction design, and workload architecture rather than differences in durability settings. This ensures that higher throughput is not achieved by weakening the delivery assurance required for mission-critical enterprise transactions.

“In regulated industries such as financial services and healthcare, a lost or unrecoverable message can disrupt sensitive information such as payments, claims, or patient workflows, so delivery failure cannot be treated as an acceptable tradeoff for speed or cost,” said Daniel Rigos, DevOps Team Lead at meshIQ and author of the report. “For each broker in our analysis, a message counted only after it was safely stored, and each test verified that the messages sent were received. With delivery assurance held constant, performance differences could be traced to architecture and workload rather than to a platform gaining speed by relaxing durability.”

Key Findings from the 2026 Analysis Include:

· Apache Artemis led several demanding durable workloads: Delivering nearly 14 times ActiveMQ’s throughput in the 1KB, high-concurrency, batch=1 JMS test, Apache Artemis also scaled strongest in durable pub/sub fan-out, and led the large-message, high-batch durable comparison. · Apache ActiveMQ excelled in batched and large-message workloads: Although power-safe settings limited small-batch commit rates, increasing the batch to 1000 pushed durable throughput beyond 34,000 messages per second. ActiveMQ also delivered the lowest request-reply latency in the report’s 100KB test. · RabbitMQ excelled in low-concurrency and native-protocol scenarios: It led low-concurrency point-to-point performance and the AMQP 1.0 batch=1 tests. Native request-reply latency also reached approximately 1.23 milliseconds at 1KB, compared with roughly 105 milliseconds through JMS.
