Letter from the editor

The IRS looms large at this time of year with people who haven't already filed their 2021 tax returns under pressure to file by Mon., April 18, or request an extension. Nobody is thrilled to pay taxes, but under-utilized regulations enacted by Congress to keep the economy humming just might make filing taxes a bit brighter, especially for businesses hit hard by the pandemic. Some could even see a big payday.

This issue's lead article explains the benefits of the Employee Retention Tax Credit, which is part of the CARES Act passed in response to the pandemic, as well as R&D tax credits, which encompass a surprising array of business activities. The article also discusses new reporting requirements related to workers paid via P2P apps.

Something else looming large right now is heightened concern about a potential large-scale cyberattack by a state-sponsored actor amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And we've got you covered. One of our contributors addresses the scope of what could happen and steps to take to help secure your data, networks and equipment. Other topics featured experts address include why 2022 might be the year restaurants spot paying credit card fees; how to create a best-in-class BNPL experience for merchants and consumers; how to spot and analyze market changes so you can adapt and leverage them; and what Apple could do to make its innovative Tap to Pay industry-altering.

We post news stories throughout the week on our homepage, www.greensheet.com, and some of them are highlighted in News Briefs. This issue includes Shift4's acquisition of Finaro, formerly Credorax, a cross-border payment and financial services provider specializing in international commerce; the unveiling by Mesh Payments, a corporate payment solutions provider, in partnership with Visa, of the Plug & Pay Visa business card; Visa's decision to lower interchange rates for small businesses when merchants were planning an advertising campaign about "the broken card market"; and Mastercard, Visa, American Express and PayPal's suspension of operations in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

Included, as well, are company and product profiles. If you read these issue to issue, you'll be among the first to learn of the latest innovations in payments and fintech. Our updates will fill you in on some of the industry's many milestones. To bring your news to our attention, please send a press release to press@greensheet.com.
