Letter from the
editors
t's been another dynamic year in payments, and
our lead article takes a look at some of the buzz-
worthy trends that helped shape the industry in
I 2013. Among them are proliferating mobile pay-
ment options, virtual currencies and expanded prepaid
offerings. As usual, many payment professionals have
been quick on their feet, ready to seize opportunities
that have arisen in the industry's shifting landscape this
year.
Our contributing writers have once again zeroed in on
ideas and developments of particular concern to ISOs and
merchant level salespeople, who truly make electronic
commerce as we know it possible. Areas explored
include e-commerce difficulties for consumers and the
need to serve all forms of commerce; the importance of
focusing less on the Next Big Thing in payments and
more on satisfying merchants' needs right now; why
respecting gatekeepers makes it easier to reach decision
makers; why bitcoin could have longevity as a payment
method; how offering POS systems can help you become
your merchants' trusted technology integrator; and the
importance of making every day count.
In this issue, you'll also find news on key developments
in the industry overall, as well as milestones specific to
individual payment companies; new product stories;
developments in the mobile sphere, and more. And
if you're curious about how news makes it into our
Industry Update section, see Readers Speak on page 8.
And one more important thing: As we've prepared this,
our last issue of 2013, for publication, we've also been
in the midst of a move. Yes, The Green Sheet is relocating
after two years of doing business in Santa Rosa. While
located within walking distance from the city's historic
Railroad Square and Courthouse Square, we've enjoyed
the ambiance, the fine restaurants and many boutiques
that provide unique treats and shopping experiences.
However, we chose to relocate to a spot more centrally
located for our staff. We found just the place in downtown
Rohnert Park. It's in a well-maintained building that
provides all the amenities a 21st century publisher could
ask for. Our new address is 5830 Commerce Blvd., Unit
B, Rohnert Park, CA 94928. Do stop in when you're in
town.
