As technology has evolved, so too has the ability of enterprising individuals to reach markets far outside their own domestic borders. Many payments and fintech companies already do business globally; others are considering expanding beyond borders soon; some are content to thrive locally. All options can work well. But if you're considering global expansion, take a look at Latin America (LATAM).
As noted in this issue's lead article, LATAM has emerged as a global ecommerce leader. Statista reported it expects the region's ecommerce sales to reach $700 billion by 2025. And a June 2022 Paysafe study, Lost in Translation: Consumer Payment Trends 2022: Navigating online payments in the age of uncertainty, found 63.5 million Brazilian consumers use neobanks. Those are just two recent reports on this fast-growing market. To explore what looks like a prime opportunity, The Green Sheet interviewed individuals whose enterprises are shaping LATAM commerce, cybersecurity, paytech and financial services.
Of course, to succeed in business anywhere, you must offer top-notch products and services. And this requires partners and vendors. One of our contributors discusses herein how to select them so you merchants will see you as a valuable consultant. Other experts have delved into what payments businesses need to know about sanctions to protect our payments rails from illegal activities; why now is the time for B2B payments to go digital; and the burgeoning buy now, pay later (BNPL) market and its potential impact on overextended consumers.
BNPL is also the topic of two news stories highlighted in this issue. One reports on how high default rates and economic headwinds are impacting some prominent BNPL providers; the second reports on increased scrutiny of BNPL firms in the UK. Other news stories include Visa's decree that beginning April 15, 2023, merchants cannot assess surcharges in excess of 3 percent on credit card payments, and The U.S. Payments Forum's new resource developed to simplify the PINless debit implementation process for retailers, networks and acquirers.
We've also included a feature on a global leader in the digital identity market, new company and product profiles, tips on starting a newsletter, and short items on recent milestones in our sphere such as recent awards for outstanding performance, executive appointments, acquisitions, partnerships and research.
