Turn checkout into change

Cannabis technology software platform provider Dutchie introduced a new point-of-sale feature designed to channel everyday cannabis purchases into support for legalization and justice reform efforts. The feature, Round Up the Change, enables dispensary customers to voluntarily round up their total at checkout. The spare change is then directed to nonprofit organizations and industry associations focused on cannabis reform.

The program is available across both in-store and ecommerce transactions for retailers operating on the Dutchie platform, the company stated, adding that Dutchie's launch partners include Mission Green and Last Prisoner Project, as well as industry groups such as US Cannabis Roundtable and Michigan Cannabis Industry Association.

These organizations focus on legalization, expungement, sentencing reform and addressing the long-term impacts of cannabis criminalization.

Dutchie powers more than 6,500 cannabis businesses throughout the United States and Canada, processes more than 1 million transactions daily and facilitates over $ 22 billion in sales annually. At that scale, even small per-transaction roundups could translate into significant funding. The company estimated the program has the potential to generate millions of dollars annually to support legal advocacy, clemency initiatives and reentry programs.

Retailers can activate the feature as an optional add-on to the checkout experience. Several operators have already enrolled as launch partners, positioning the program as an extension of their broader social equity commitments.

Executives from participating retailers have said the feature aligns with the industry's roots in grassroots activism while preserving a frictionless checkout experience. By embedding the donation option directly into existing workflows, Round Up the Change allows customers to contribute without adding operational complexity at the counter or online, Dutchie stated.

Dutchie pointed out that advocates believe that legalization alone does not resolve the long-term consequences of prohibition. Many individuals continue to face barriers to employment, housing and economic opportunity due to past cannabis convictions, even in states where adult-use markets are now established. Round Up the Change is now available to eligible Dutchie retailers nationwide. Retailers interested in participating or adding additional nonprofit partners can contact their Dutchie representative for enrollment details.
